Welcome to the Dr. Charles A. Sankey Lecture Series
This annual lecture series is named in honour of R.W. Bro. Charles A. Sankey (1905 – 2009) and is part of the partnership between the Grand Lodge of Canada in the Province of Ontario and Brock University.
The partnership established between the Grand Lodge and Brock University, St. Catharines, has proven most productive and mutually beneficial to both educational institutions. Its beginning was with the initiative of the Heritage Lodge No. 730 to support and maintain the Masonic collection in the James A. Gibson Library, and continuing with the posting on line of the Proceedings of Grand Lodge from 1855 to 2010.
Dr. Sankey served as Chancellor of Brock University from 1969 to 1974. A renowned Masonic scholar, he was active in all the concordant bodies of Masonry including the Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite, the Royal Order of Scotland, and Royal Arch Masons. His extensive collection of rare Masonic books and papers is in the Special Collections of the James Gibson Library at Brock, providing a rich resource for research scholars and students.the Masonic collection in the James A. Gibson Library, and continuing with the posting online of the Proceedings of Grand Lodge from 1855 to 2010.
2018 SANKEY LECTURE
The 2018 Sankey Lecture will be presented by Dr. William D. Moore and is entitled Catechism, Spectacle, Burlesque: American Fraternal Ritual Performance, 1733-1933, on Sunday April 15, 2018. Dr. Moore is the Director of the American & New England Studies Program, and Associate Professor of American Material Culture, Department of History of Art & Architecture, Boston University, Boston, MA Professor Moore teaches courses on American material culture and vernacular landscapes. He is the author of Masonic Temples: Freemasonry, Ritual Architecture, and Masculine Archetypes and numerous articles interrogating the interrelationship between built form and systems of belief. His current book project analyzes the nation’s fascination with the Shakers in the years between 1925 and 1965.

2017 Sankey Lecture
We were very pleased that the 2017 Sankey Lecture was presented by Dr. Aimee E. Newell. Dr. Newell’s lecture was on The Badge of a Freemason: New Stories from Old Aprons. Dr. Aimee E. Newell is the Executive Director, Luzerne County Historical Society, Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania and before that was the Director of Collections, Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library (Lexington Massachusetts) with curatorial responsibility for a collection of 17,000 artifacts, including Masonic and fraternal artifacts and American decorative arts. Dr. Newell has published a number of books including Curiosities of the Craft: Treasures from the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts Collection (2013). Dr. Newell’s most recent book is entitled The Badge of a Freemason: Masonic Aprons from the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library (2015). The video is available here.
